General education expectation
The Wesleyan curriculum is divided into three areas. Students are encouraged to select courses from all three areas to experience the full dimension of intellectual breadth vital to a liberal education:
- Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM)
- Social and Behavioural Sciences (SBS)
- Humanities and the Arts (HA)
The general education expectation are divided into two stages:
stage 1At least two course credits in each of the three areas, all from different departments or programs, by the end of your fourth semester.

stage 2One additional course credit in each of the three areas prior to graduation, for a total of nine general education course credits

Fulfilling GenEd is also required for all students wishing to declare more than a combined total of two majors, certificates, and minors. A student who does not meet these expectations by the time of graduation will not be eligible for:

To provide continuity in the advising relationship, each faculty member typically advises the same group of students for their first year and a half, until they declare majors. The objective of the pre-major advising program is to help first-year students and sophomores think seriously about their educational objectives in the context of the liberal arts education offered at Wesleyan. Incoming students will be asked to complete all of the First-Year pre-registration sections before coming to Wesleyan. The Office for Academic Affairs matches advisors and advisees, taking into account information you provide on Academic Interests and Interests & Goals sections. First-Year pre-registration also works as a tool for students to craft an academic plan of study for their four years at Wesleyan.

The SAR (Student Academic Resources) Peer Advising Program provides students with a well-informed resource about the curriculum and course registration, as well as academic resource referrals, beginning with New Student Orientation and continuing throughout the year. Peer advisors play a key supportive role during New Student Orientation. In combination with other important advising resources (e.g., registration materials sent in the summer, the on-line advisee guidelines, residence hall meetings, etc.), they assist new students in preparing for their individual meetings with their advisors. Beyond New Student Orientation, SAR peer advisors maintain a regular presence in the residence halls and on-line throughout the academic year. Another great academic resource to deciding courses is students who have gone through what you are about to go through! They will be able to share more first-hand information with you regarding their experience with certain classes and professors.
